Uber to Integrate London's Iconic Black Taxis on Its App in 2024
Uber announces its intention to include London's iconic black taxis in its app, slated for an early 2024 launch. The move follows Uber's collaborations with taxi fleets globally, with recent additions in Los Angeles, New York City, Paris, and Rome. Despite interest from some London taxi drivers, the 10,000-strong Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association expresses reservations, citing concerns about Uber's safety record and labor rights. Uber plans to diversify its U.K. app with additional transportation options, including intercity trains and car rentals.
London's black taxi drivers, traditionally available on apps like Gett, Taxiapp, FreeNow, and ComCab, face uncertainty about joining Uber. The association spokesperson, Steve McNamara, emphasizes their reluctance to associate with Uber's reputation. Uber aims to increase market share by expanding its offerings, providing options beyond ride-hailing, such as airline tickets and National Express services, to enhance app stickiness.
Uber's strategy includes dispatching regular taxi trips with upfront fares and location details to black taxi drivers. New drivers are offered a 0% commission for the first six months, potentially driving early sign-ups. The licensing association raises concerns about sullying the reputation of London's iconic black cab trade by aligning with Uber, highlighting the contentious nature of Uber's entry into the London black taxi market.
Despite opposition, Uber continues its global efforts to integrate traditional taxi services, introducing diverse transportation options in the U.K. app. The move sparks debates about safety, labor rights, and the potential impact on London's distinctive black cab trade.
