Oriole Networks, a UCL spinoff, has raised £10 million in pilot funding to advance its technology aimed at reducing the energy needed to power AI data centers. The funding round was jointly led by Clean Growth Fund, UCL Technology Fund, XTX Ventures, and Dorilton Ventures.

Oriole's technology involves using light beams instead of ethernet cables to connect the networks of GPUs, which is expected to achieve a one hundredfold increase in information transmission speed in data centers.

The technology has been independently validated and is expected to be deployed in data centers in the coming years. The team includes Professor George Zervas, Alessandro Ottino, and Joshua Benjamin, and is led by Tech.eu's CEO James Regan, who has a track record of turning university spinoffs into successful technology companies.

The funding from Dorilton Ventures and Clean Growth Fund emphasizes the growing importance of sustainable development in the face of rapidly increasing energy consumption in data centers, driven by the demand for artificial intelligence.
